Present Your Wares Accurately with Display Mannequins

Posted by on Tuesday, 28 September, 2010

If you are a clothing retailer, then you know that a having great display can make all the difference when it comes to attracting people and persuading them to visit your place of business. It does not matter is you have a permanent storefront, or if your retail activities take place in booths and trade shows around the country; actively displaying your clothes in ways that attract and entice customers is one of the most effective means of promoting your product. One of the most effective ways of creating displays that are easily relatable, and that will attract new customers, is with display mannequins. The following paragraphs will discuss some of the popular uses for display mannequins, as well as features and designs that can help to make your mannequin displays stand out from the crowd.

A display mannequin is essentially a sculpture of a human form. Most people imagine mannequins to be fairly one-dimensional. However, mannequins may take several shapes or forms. These forms are most often in adult sizes and are very symmetrical, essentially representing an ideal human form, which is most often in a neutral standing position. Mannequins are not limited to this very stereotypical position, however. They may also take active, sporty positions, they may be seated, or they may be adjustable to suit the specific requirements of a given display. In addition, today’s display mannequins for sale come in multiple sizes, shapes, and colors, effectively providing a more accurate representation of the people to whom they cater.

Mannequins are not only for displaying clothing items; some other popular display options are the jewelry display mannequin, and mannequin head displays, which are typically used in hairdressing salons or in hat shops. Jewelry display mannequins are most often busts, used to show off earrings, necklaces and hairpieces. Other options for displaying jewelry include hand or entire arm models, to display rings, bracelets and watches. For retailers that specialize in foot and leg wear, another popular form of display consists of just mannequin legs, effectively removing bulk from the display, and focusing on the relevant clothing items.

As a retailer, you may wonder why using hair, jewelry, or clothing display mannequins should be chosen over other display options and forms of promotion, such as photo ad campaigns. The answer is simple: Mannequins are reusable. It does not matter what season it is, what styles are in or out, or exactly what it is you are trying to promote at any given time, mannequins will suit your needs. If you choose to do a photo campaign and hang large banners in your storefront or booth, you will have a very attractive display for that season, but once the season changes and your wares change accordingly, you will be required to go through the entire process again. The costs of photo ad campaigns, including paying model, stylist, and photographer fees, can quickly become prohibitive, meaning that you will need to limit the number of times you change campaigns, and thereby limiting your selling ability. With window display mannequins however, you have the option of changing their looks as often as you like. You will be creating an attractive store or booth front, while inspiring passersby concerning the types of clothing that they might find if they take a closer look.

Shopping for mannequins may initially feel daunting, since there are multiple online retailers that would love to have your business, and since those with little or no experience with display mannequins likely do not know what to look for, or the full scope of their options. Obviously, price will always be a factor to consider. Purchase prices vary considerably, depending upon the quality of construction, the warranty, if any, offered the originality of the design, and the special features of the specific model. Finding your perfect price range will necessarily depend upon the features that you wish to have included with your mannequins, as well as the volume of product ordered at any given time.

There are multiple types of mannequin retailers to choose from, the basic distinction to make is whether the company’s display mannequins are custom designed and built for their clients, or whether their products are more generic. Retailers that choose to go with custom mannequin designs are often interested in projecting a very specific image or stance with their male and female displays. They may require specific bodily or facial features, in order to appeal to a specific audience. Often, ordering custom-made mannequins is best for retailers that are buying in large quantities, since the cost of having one or more models custom built can be prohibitive for just one or two pieces. For retailers interested in buying just one male or female display mannequin, sometimes choosing a more popular design is a means of saving money, but still getting the look that you are after.

Buying Used Store Fixtures for your Display Needs

Posted by on Sunday, 26 September, 2010

Businesses that participate in trade shows, fairs and exhibitions often to need to invest in fixtures for display. In many cases, the same fixtures can be used at different shows when the size or shape of the hired stall is of standard measurements. This becomes particularly important for companies that have a frequent participation in such shows. So they do not need to invest in a new set of fixtures each time, and try to standardize the displays.

A cost effective way to buy such fixtures is to look for used store fixtures. These are sometimes available at throwaway prices, so the business can save a substantial amount of money on this expense. If a store is going out of business or shutting down a particular outlet, it may put out its used store fixtures for sale. These are the kind of opportunities that can lead to good quality fixtures at a very low price. If one looks around carefully such opportunities can be found without much difficulty.

There are also specialized used store fixtures inc that exclusively deal in second hand fixtures. These companies buy out such items at very low prices and create a large inventory at their warehouse. Therefore, anyone who needs to buy different types of low priced fixtures can visit the warehouse and pick up the items for a cheap price. Some of the items at such places can be as good as new, so it can be a very profitable bargain sometimes.

However, it should be noted that any such used retail store would add a profit margin for their storage and selling services. Therefore, the price may not be as cheap as what one may get through a direct buyout. If someone is selling out their used retail store fixtures directly, that could make for a more attractive bargain because there is no profit margin or commission for the middleman or trader involved in between.

While purchasing such used fixtures, it is also important to evaluate the condition and quality of the material. A very old, dilapidated or shabby looking product may not be suitable for presentation at a trade show or exhibition. It may in fact prove to be negative for the business. Therefore, even when one is buying used store display fixtures, it is prudent to exercise discretion and buy a presentable quality. Display must always be impressive and make an impact on the people. Therefore, the fixtures should be cost effective, but cost must not be the sole deciding factor.

The choice of fixture also depends on the kind of product that is going to be displayed on it. Each fixture is specifically designed for a particular type of product, so only the appropriate fixtures should be chosen for the products. For instance, used grocery store fixtures cannot be placed in a stall that requires used jewelry store fixtures. Such fixtures will be customized according to the size and nature of the product. Therefore, any inappropriate display can hamper the objective of a display or an exhibit.

Used clothing store fixtures are among the more popular used store display fixtures. Firstly, the number of clothing stores is very large so the chances of obtaining these fixtures in the market are always high. Secondly, clothing displays are generally in standard measurements that match with the display needs of different kind of products. So if you are selling or exhibiting a specialized product that does not have any customized displays available in the marketplace, you may check out a few garment displays on sale and see if they can fit into your requirements.

A smart way to buy used store fixtures can be to speak to a few store managers and seek out information on when the store may be likely to sell out their old fixtures and replace them with new ones. If you have such information at hand in advance, you can be well prepared to be the first one to cash out the opportunity as soon as it comes up. Sometimes antique stores also double up as used furniture sale stores, so look at a few antique stores as well when you are scouting for such items.

The Internet has also become an excellent resource for locating such second hand items. Many people who are planning to sell out their old furniture and display fixtures put out their ads on popular websites such as eBay and Craigslist. There are also many other websites where buyers and sellers can place free classified advertisements for such items. So it may be worthwhile to explore the possibility of buying these items online. However, proper discretion and judgment must be exercised if you are buying from unknown people through the Internet.

With a little effort and creativity, it is possible to acquire nice fixtures for your display needs at very low prices.

If You Are Looking For Durability, Consider Custom Metal Signs

Posted by on Tuesday, 21 September, 2010

When most businesses think of custom signs and banners for their trade show they tend to overlook the value that custom metal signs can add to their display. If you have a large display area and you regularly attend different trade shows or expos you may want to look into investing into purchasing some customized metal signs to use in addition to the regular banners or other signs you use.

Metal signs have one advantage over most other types of signs and banners; they are much more durable and permanent. The cost of investing in a metal sign will soon be offset by the simple fact that you will be able to use the sign many times over. Of course, before going ahead with a custom metal sign you will need to plan in advance what you will use the sign for and what you want printed on it. As far as their design goes, they are usually highly customizable. They can be made from many different types of metal, with many custom sign designers also able to cut the metal into different shapes. Following are some typical uses for custom made metal signs that are used for display purposes.

Information: If you regularly need to display information about a product, such as the material it is made from, size and pricing options, or even POP displays to hold items that you are advertising, you may find that a metal sign better suits your needs.

Logos: Many companies find it helpful to have their logo design placed on a metal sign. The sign will not deteriorate with use and age, and it can be used many times. Frequently these are displayed on a wooden or metal stand which can be moved to any location. They can be placed on the top of cabinets or on counters and desks.

Directional Signs: If you have a large booth or display you may also find it helpful to have signs that point to specific displays or items. Small metal signs, similar to placeholders can also be used to label different sections of a larger display. Some signs can be made with a magnetic backing so that they easily attach to metal display shelves. They can also be made to sit on small stands which can be moved around at will, allowing greater flexibility when it comes to setting up displays.

Aside from the benefit of their being long-lasting, there are other reasons to consider using them. Depending on how they are made and the material they are made from, custom signs on metal can be fairly lightweight. Also, they do not bend, crease or become damaged easily during transportation. These two factors make them ideal when you have to transport them long distances, or ship them on ahead. No special packaging is needed and you do not need to worry how they will look once they reach their destination.

Metal signs are also useful for other purposes. You will frequently see custom metal street signs used around town. Many businesses will print their company name on a metal plaque that is mounted outside of their premises, and metal signs are used internally to point the way to different department sections. Nicely mounted custom made metal signs can also be used as nameplates that sit on desks. They are used on doors and at reception desks, in hallways, lobbies and outdoor parking areas. Basically, wherever you need a sign that is going to last and that looks professional, metal should be your choice.

There are many different choices when it comes to designing these types of signs. Most custom metal signs are made from aluminum which is hard wearing and yet still very light and manageable. They are great in areas that get a lot of traffic or in areas that are exposed to the outside elements. Different thicknesses of aluminum can be chosen, depending on how sturdy you need the sign to be and where it will be placed. Copper, bronze, stainless steel and brushed steel are also often used.

Aside from signs made from solid metal, some use thin layers that are soldered together instead. These are usually cheaper than the solid metal signs and they are generally quite a bit lighter. Thus they are best used indoors or when firmly attached to a building or wall. You can also buy custom metal signs where a very thin sheet of metal is attached to an acrylic backing. Again, these signs are usually quite cheap and very lightweight.

Usually you will be asked to supply your own artwork and graphics, although many companies will also help to design the sign for you for a small fee. You can place graphics on the sign and choose which typeset or font face to use for the text on the sign.

If you want something that is durable and yet looks very professional, whether for a trade fair or for your own business premises custom metal signs may be just what you are looking for. They are relatively cheap and very durable; definitely a good investment for anyone wishing to have a more permanent sign made.

Using Custom Printed Pens at Trade Shows

Posted by on Sunday, 19 September, 2010

Some view a pen as just a pen. They will use the pen to write with and then store it in their desk drawer or purse until they need it again. They may even think nothing of giving it to someone else who needs one. There are also other people who actually take pen collecting seriously as a hobby and go out of their way to find unique and/or ordinary pens to keep out and display. These people would not loan their pen to someone. Either way, companies and organizations know that basically everyone uses pens. Therefore having the company or organization choose to advertise using custom printed pens is basically a no-brainer. Pens are a great way to get the name or service of a company or organization out there and for their label and name to become known.

Pens get passes around, borrowed, and sometimes innocently stolen from a business or another person. When this happens and the pen goes from hand to hand, there is the opportunity to also get your name out there. That is where a custom printed pen comes in handy. Custom pen printing is becoming an industry trend for companies or organizations whose goal is to be noticed. Doing this is not only cost-efficient but proven effective in advertising.

Promotional pens are basically inexpensive and easy to order for any business. Trades shows are notorious for having an overabundance of custom printed ink pens. These are handed out like candy and people seem to be happily accepting them. Everyone could use a pen, so taking advantage of the possibility that advertising using custom print pens could be a gain for your company or organization is good. That is why they are so popular at trades show exhibits. This can definitely help whatever the cause, product, or service is when getting referrals or more customers.

A trade show is basically a platform that different companies in a specified industry, depending on the trade show, can use to demonstrate or even just showcase their products, new studies done, or their unique service in an exhibit. Trade shows are important when displaying what your company or organization can do for someone. There is a lot of traffic that goes through the trade shows and that is why using a custom print pen as one of your major ways of advertising is essential. Most kiosks that are set up have the pens noticeably set out for anyone to grab as they go by. Usually, someone grabbing a pen may stop to see what the particular product or service is. After all, trade shows are all about showing off what you have or can do and that is why people are there in the first place.

There are a lot of different vendors that can help you with custom printing pens. Even the tradeshow you are placing an exhibit at usually has an option to order customized items from them directly to set up at your display. You can choose from a large variety of colors, designs, brands, and types. One of the most common and recognizable brand out there are custom printed BIC pens. These are the easiest and one of the cheapest to hand out and give away without breaking the bank. The different cheaper brands can go for 25 cents a pen and can be ordered in bulk to ensure you do not run out while giving them away when using the pen to target potential customers or, depending on what kind of organization you are, donors.

There is also the option to purchase slightly more expensive custom pens. These are usually around $1.00 to $2.00 and some even have the option of a case that goes with the pen. They could be used to motivate or award an existing employee. These can be viewed as more exclusive and another great way to advertise, even if it is just for a select few employees to have for themselves.

Custom printing pens will always have a large market. They are not only extremely useful for the person who needs to write something with an ink pen, but they are also an easy and capable way to announce or introduce your company. Promoting this way is popular at almost every trade show because of how easy it is to use them to communicate your message effectively. Just by giving one away, it can open the door to a dialogue about what you have to offer at the trade show and the details about the company or organization you are with. Simply giving someone a promotional pen may even stop them long enough so that a demonstration can be done, or a brochure can be taken.

Whatever your business is, whatever your organization is, and whatever your cause is, using custom printed pens at trade shows is a perfect way to let people know about you and why they should remember you.

Buying Portable Display Boards

Posted by on Monday, 5 July, 2010

Portable display boards continue to be the tools for clubs and businesses to effectively communicate special events to gathering and ‘drive-by’ clients. The largest change that has occurred over the last ten years is the shear variety of signage options that are available. Price, design, and size vary to meet every niche in the display market.

Types of Portable Boards

Tri-Fold Displays

For indoor presentations, trade shows, and job fairs the traditional tabletop display still reigns supreme. Generally, with a tri-fold design, these vary in size from 30” tall to full height 72” tall behemoths of the trade show floor. Each can be designed with custom graphics or be generic solid colors, ready for the application of your information of the day. Surfaces vary from cork to fabrics of grey, blue, or black. Custom headers are available, as well as many other forms of customization.

Outdoor Displays

Outdoor display boards include Poster Displays, Sandwich Boards, Banners, Flags, Letter Boards, LED static displays, programmable flashing message boards, and outdoor light boards. Depending on your budget and the function, you need to fill, the outdoor portable display solutions are as varied and the users considering them.

Classic Styles of Portable Boards

These visual assistants come in many surfaces and styles. Depending on your purpose, a different type of portable display board may meet your needs. Surfaces vary, from the poster-board of single use displays intended for such functions as science fairs, to highly adaptable hook and eye surfaces that allow Velcro application of visuals to custom printed banners in full-height floor displays. Even cork surfaces remain available, speaking to their clean looks and ease of modification.

Recently, display boards with swinging panels have returned as a “story board” for products, organizations, and services. These standing units allow the client to examine part or all of the visual presentation, packing more information into less space than a format, which presents all the information at once. This can be a useful means to provide on-site briefings in areas where the technological support does not exist for a PowerPoint ™ presentation.

Where to Find Visual Presentation Boards

Today, the right portable presentation board is available somewhere, the difficultly is in narrowing down where to find one. Local office supply stores offer some solutions, while mail-order catalogs and the internet host a spectrum of options. In some instances, it takes a marketing maven to decide the right board for the right method of conveying information. The Internet has a broad spectrum of offerings. The key is to find the right solution to meet your marketing message needs and your budget.

Putting Power to Your Message

In most industries, bigger is better. While having a tabletop tri-fold display with color Inkjet print on letter-sized paper might do for some venues, it will not handle all of them. Bigger has now become portable. Pop-up displays using much of the same fabrication used in back-yard shelters can now make portable a trade show display that once took days to create on site. Better yet, you can pack it away to be used again in the next city.

These impressive visual display units come in a wide array of sizes and designs, including backlit screens, and mounts for flat screen monitors to allow integration of video into the overall design. Many accordion-fold or break into multiple small components to minimize shipping space. Intended for retail spaces, trade shows, and incorporate special lighting to accent your message. These designs do generally incorporate fabric walls that have full-length images, generally to a height of 72 inches. These fabric walls can be straight or in various geometric curves.

The Power of Simplicity

While flashy graphics and custom design can go a long way, sometimes the best portable boards are the simplest. Many companies find that simple A-frame white boards, boards with changeable letters, and even a-frame chalkboards are the only tool they need to convey their message. Quality materials then plays a role, as simplicity does not mean that you want to replace signage and displays annually or even more frequently.

Finding Quality Products

Look for key indicators that your provider has faith in the quality of their product. Substantive material defect warranties, a list of preferred customers, and review websites can all be great tools in finding the right portable platform for your message to last you for years to come. Whether it is high-tech and includes actual LCD monitors, medium tech with a light box and custom graphics, or a simple chalkboard, consider the life you expect for these units.

Anything that will be shipping, in and out of car trucks or crates, needs to be durable and built to last. While not a feature, longevity is key metric of value when considering portable display boards. Make the right choice for the equipment your need as the platform of your business message.

Make Your Own Wood Sign

Posted by on Sunday, 4 July, 2010

Wood signs can be used for all different kinds of purposes. It is the most popular type of homemade sign because wood is easy to obtain and shape. Although metal can last longer in outdoor conditions, it is much more expensive and difficult to shape without specialized tools. Making a wooden sign is simple and can be done with minimal tools and experience.

Choosing Wood for Your Sign

The type of wood you choose is one of the most important steps when building wood signs. Cheap woods will rot easily so they should be avoided completely. Ply board and other thin woods should also not be used because they will quickly disintegrate when exposed to harsh conditions. When making outdoor wood signs, the wood will need to be as sturdy and weatherproof as possible. Teak wood is a good choice because it is weather resistant and will last a long time even if it is exposed to bad weather. Although it may be more expensive, in the end it will be a much better investment.

The post can be made from either wood or metal. This wood should also be highly weather resistant and strong enough to support the sign. For large signs, use multiple posts to add increased support. Once you purchase strong wood, you should still add a weatherproof coating to insure that it is completely resistant to rain and snow. If there are termites in the area, be sure to regularly spray to protect your sign and the post.

If you are not sure what materials to use, then try walking around your neighborhood and find out what materials the wooden house signs nearby are made from. Wood stores can also provide helpful recommendations on what materials to use for your sign.

Cutting and Shaping your Wood Sign

Strong woods are usually quite thick so they can be difficult to cut into complex shapes. The most common shapes for wooden signs are square, but they can also be circles, diamond, or any other shape you choose. Some people prefer to not shape the wood to give the sign a rustic appearance.

When buying wood for your sign you should make sure that is wider and longer than the required shape to provide room for cutting and sanding. If you want to shape the wood, you should have a sharp saw on hand for cutting. After the sign has been cut you will need to sand the both the sides and the surface to get rid of any loose chips and splinters.

Sign Creation and Design

Before putting your design on the wood, you should first draw it out on a sheet of paper to give an idea of what it will look like. Although a custom wood sign can be painted any color, many people prefer to leave them unpainted to display the wooden texture. After you are sure about your design, you can transfer it to the wood itself.

Carved wood signs are very popular, but they require expertise in woodcarving in order for them to come out properly. If you have done woodcarving before, you can carve your sign using a basic set of caving tools. However, carving is not convenient for large signs unless you want to work on the project all day.

When painting wood surfaces, make sure the wood is in a horizontal position. Never paint your custom wood sign once it is on its post or the paint may drip down leaving marks. Some woods tend to soak in paint so they may need multiple coats.

Building a Post

The post is an important part of building a sign because it will be holding it up all the time. A post should be planted deep inside the ground to ensure that it will not tip over in heavy winds. The ground should also not be muddy or it may fall out of its foundation. One tip is to create an additional foundation using cement or gravel to provide extra support. Once the cement has hardened, the pole will be unmovable so make sure it is at a straight angle.

Add a Protective Coating

Even if your wood is resistant to water, you should still add a protective layer to help it last longer. Varnish is often used to coat wood and can be purchased at most hardware stores. To add varnish, sand down the entire sheet of wood first and wipe of any sawdust and dirt. Usually the varnish container will have a list of instructions you can follow while applying it. Using a paintbrush, lightly brush the wood with the varnish until the entire area is coated. Leave for about 6 hours to dry, then lightly sand it again and apply another coat. Repeat this process a few more times as specified by the manufacturer.

Standard types of Vinyl Banners Used for Promotional Purposes

Posted by on Saturday, 3 July, 2010

Banners can be made from a variety of different material; however, banners made from vinyl are usually the strongest and longest lasting. Vinyl is an extremely durable material that will stand up to adverse weather conditions if used outside and that is also waterproof. While not all banners are made from vinyl, most that are made for long-term use are. There are many different types of vinyl banners, however, with each being suited to a specific location or use. When ordering your banner you will be able to specify which custom vinyl banners you are interested in.

The standard vinyl banner is suited for both indoor and outdoor use, as it is weather and water resistant. However, it is more commonly used either indoors or at sheltered outdoor locations mainly because it is not so practical to use outdoors in windy areas. It is possible to cut slots in the vinyl so that the wind can pass through but this detracts from the overall appearance of the banner and as such is usually not the first choice when it comes to outdoor use. Vinyl banner printing is usually digital full color printing, meaning that you are able to custom design exactly what you want to appear on it. You can custom design the logo, image and text that you want printed on it and choose any color you want for the text.

If you want to use your banner in both indoor and outdoor locations, you may be interested in having it made with scrim vinyl. This type of material is well known for being extremely durable and able to withstand all kinds of outdoor weather conditions ranging from heavy rain to bright sunlight. It is also very opaque, again making it ideal to use in sunny outdoor locations as light will not readily pass through and thus the image remains very easy to see.

You can also use banners made with matte vinyl outdoors. While not quite as durable as other types of vinyl, it is great to put up in areas where glare may prevent people from being able to clearly see the image on it. You are also able to see the images and text from wide angles, making it perfect for areas such as outdoor stadiums where there is some protection from harsh weather conditions but where people will be looking at it from all angles.

If you are planning on printing on both sides of the banner, you may need to opt for using blackout vinyl. With this type of material, a middle layer of blackout vinyl is used in-between two layers of regular vinyl. This effectively stops the image from one side showing through onto the other side and is especially useful when it will be erected where there are bright lights shining from one direction, such as in areas where bright floodlights will be used or where sunlight would shine directly down onto it.

Mesh vinyl is a great choice for outdoor vinyl banners as well. This is very similar to the standard type of vinyl with one small, but important difference. Tiny holes are punched into the vinyl so that both wind and light can pass through. Even though there are tiny holes, it does not impair the view of the image on the banner at all. It is very useful for outdoor situations where the banner will not be backed by any solid backing, such as the side of a building. For example, it is often used on open mesh fences. Putting up a regular banner on a fence, where the wind could blow through the fence may result in it actually blowing off and causing danger, depending on the velocity of the wind or it could even cause the fence itself to fall down if the wind was strong enough.

Finally, if you are interested in sticking your banner to a vehicle or onto large display boards you could use adhesive vinyl. This is especially made with adhesive glue on the back so that it can be attached to any smooth surface.

Most of these options are readily available at banner printing depots online. These sites make it very easy for you to make your order online and then upload any graphics or text you want included on the banner. If you need a custom vinyl banner, you can usually specify any particulars. You can also select different options to see which is the most cost effective. That is particularly helpful if you are interested in purchasing cheap vinyl banners as you can choose different options until you come up with something that will both suit your needs and your budget.

Banners are commonly used for promotional purposes, trade fairs and to display information. Thankfully, there is a large range that you can choose from and they are very easy to order and have custom made. Shipping is also usually fairly inexpensive as vinyl banners are fairly lightweight.

A Brief History Of Neon Light Signs

Posted by on Saturday, 3 July, 2010

Neon light signs have been an iconic fixture of American culture since the invention of the modern day neon light at the turn of the 20th century. Today neon lights come in a variety of designs, shapes, styles and colors. The applications for such lights are also as vast and varied as their manufacture. Businesses such as bars, restaurants, gas stations and pretty much any organization that wants to draw some attention with a unique sign utilizes these devices. Some are as large as cars and even bigger as evidenced by the virtual neon city in downtown Las Vegas and some are made very small for storefront windows.

Lighted neon signs are a unique spectacle with and equally unusual development over time. Their invention was not a precise moment in time but a string of developments that span over 200 years. Basically, a neon sign is a compilation of glass tubes filled with the element neon in its gas form among other inert gases at a relatively low pressure inside the tube. When an electrical charge is applied inside the tube, the gases begin to glow.

In the middle of the 19th century or somewhere around 1855 to 1860, the Geissler tube was developed by a German glass blower of the same name. Geissler was also a physicist and designed the tube for testing electrical discharge. It was not until several decades later in the early 1900’s after many experiments had been performed using electric discharge lamps that neon lights in their pre-modern form were brought to the United States.

Although there are conflicting accounts, the invention of the first neon lamp as we know it today is credited to Georges Claude, a French chemist who was the first to apply an electrical charge to a pressurized tube filled with neon gas to create faint light. This development was displayed to the French public in December of 1910. Five years later, Mr. Claude would patent his invention going down in the history books as the man who invented the modern day neon light. He eventually took his research and invention further by creating a company known as Claude Neon and opening American eyes to the wonder and special that was a neon light. It is said the first neon lights sold in the U.S. where to a car dealership that paid over 1,000 dollars apiece for 2 signs in 1923.

Making neon signs today is both an art and a science. Neon tubes are made of glass and as such, must be heated to be bent and manipulated into the unique signs we see every day. The craftsman that does this work is similar to a glass blower however, in the industry they are commonly referred to as a glass bender. It takes years of training and experience to be able to successfully and artfully bend glass to make interesting and special glass designs for use in a neon light sign.

The whole process of making signs neon lights starts with varying lengths of hollow glass tubes purchased by a neon shop from a sign or glass supplier. Different compositions of glass can be used although most any will be suitable for use in a sign. Varying consistencies of glass include hard glass, soft glass, lead glass, soda/lime glass or barium glass. Temperatures to heat glass to its melting point can vary based on these compositions from sixteen hundred degrees F to over two thousand degrees. Color of the end product lamp is determined both by the type of tubing used as well as the gases that fill the tube through which an electrical charge will eventually run.

Several types of flames are used to heat the glass tube in sections depending on the type of bend the craftsman is trying to achieve. For example, a ribbon flame is used to make a gradual bend in the tube as opposed to a crossfire flame that is used to make a sharp turn bend in the tube. Many different flames can be used throughout the production cycle of a neon sign based on what it is to look like.

After bending, the tubes are sometimes coated with a phosphorescent powder that is laid on the interior wall of the tube. The tube is then filled with a gas mixture such as neon and other inert gases. Although neon has become the most well known gas used in this manufacturing procedure, many other gases for example argon or mercury in gas form are used to obtain different colors. The gas in the tubes is then ionized by high voltage and the tubes sealed. Electrode ends are placed at the ends of the tubes where colors will be the same so that they can be plugged into the power adapter mounted on the sign.

Many different styles of lighted neon signs are made today- Everything from animals and pictures of people to a Coors light neon signs. Nothing is impossible for glass benders to recreate. They also come in many different colors and sizes with some being as large as a car and others big enough to fit in your window at home.

Making a neon sign light is not a mass production operation. Many neon shops are smaller family owned businesses with highly skilled craftsman that spend hours manipulating glass to build unique individual signs. Many of the tools used in such shops and businesses are not commercially purchased but hand made by neon workers themselves based on the types of signs they make and their own person preferences. The next time you walk by a gas station or a grocery store and see a neon sign, think of the blood, sweat and tears that probably went into making it.

Tips for Choosing and Maintaining a Wall Display Cabinet

Posted by on Friday, 2 July, 2010

A wall display cabinet is usually the center of attraction in any room. When choosing a wall cabinet, you should take into account the items you are planning display inside and how the cabinet is going to match the rest of the décor in the room it will be placed in. Different types of objects require different types of cabinets for the best possible display.

Types of Wall Display Cabinets

Wall mounted display cabinets come in a variety of sizes and styles. There is a wide range of sizes displaying small or large objects, there are special cabinets created for displaying trophies and awards, and there are specifically designed curio cabinets for small objects, such as figurines made of porcelain and other collectibles.

Before choosing a cabinet, browse through a few catalogues and check out a few websites. There are so many designs and materials on the market that the choice can be overwhelming, so it is a good idea to do some research and narrow down your choices before visiting a store.

Most display cabinets are mainly glass, and have only simple frames for support. Some cabinets have glass on all four sides, but many units are made with three sides made with glass and a back wall that is made of another material that provides an attractive background to the items on display. The back wall can be lined with velvet or other luxurious materials to enhance the presentation of a trophy or an award.

The frames can be made of different types of wood or metal. What works best depends on where the unit is going to be placed, how it fits with the rest of the furniture, and of course on what you are planning to put into the cabinet. Some items look better against traditional and classic wooden frames, but if the rest of the room has a modern decor, sleek metal frames are a better option. The best way to find the right design is to place some of the display items in the cabinet and see how they look with different styles and materials. For displaying valuable objects, choose a unit made with hard glass that is difficult to break. Tempered glass is much stronger than normal glass and is a good choice for displaying jewelry.

Additional Features in a Wall Display Cabinet

Some cabinets come with inside lights. You can highlight a specific object by pointing a spotlight towards it, and this works especially well if there is one item in your display that is the centerpiece and is more valuable or important than the others. You can also come up with different ways to present the objects by placing the individual lights in different parts of the cabinet: behind each shelf, at the bottom to point upwards or in the top part to point down at the display items. Some units are also equipped with mirrors that can help viewers to get a better view of the display.

Lights and mirrors are extra features that can make the units more attractive, but also more expensive. Depending on your budget, these can be great ways to enhance the displays. You might also want a design you can customize by adding or removing shelves as your collection changes over time.

One of the main benefits of choosing a wall mounted display cabinet instead of a freestanding unit is that a fixed unit is more stable. Wall units can also save space in a room. In a family house, a cabinet that is mounted high on the wall is a safer option for keeping expensive or important items than a one that stands on the floor and can be opened or even damaged by small children.

How to Clean Glass Cabinets

Because cabinets are the centerpieces in most rooms, it is important to clean them often. The glass parts may have to be cleaned several times a week to keep dust away and to wipe away fingerprints and other stains. The outside parts usually have to be cleaned more frequently than the inside surfaces and the shelves.

For cleaning the glass parts, use a window cleaning product or just plain water. Some people recommend adding a dash of vinegar into the cleaning water, especially if there are visible stains or persistent dirt. Use a damp cloth to wipe the glass clean and use another clean cloth to dry the glass. If you use washing up liquid in the water, make sure to dry the glass carefully so that the soap does not leave any marks on the surface.

Any wooden parts can be cleaned with water and mild washing-up liquid. Use a soft piece of cloth to wipe the wooden surfaces clean. By keeping the wall display cabinet spotless, you can make sure your display gets the attention it deserves.

Sign Sand Blasting Process

Posted by on Thursday, 1 July, 2010

Sandblasted signs contain flexible and thick masking materials that adhere to the wood, protecting it from erosion throughout the sandblasting process. There are many different steps involved in creating sandblasting sands. Once the layout and design process have been completed, the fabrication begins.

First Step: Constructing the Blank Sign

The basic shape of the sign before the sandblasting process is known as a “Sign Blank”. Sandblasted wood signs are usually made from clear grade lumber, which is fairly thick and easy to work with. The lumber is treated under extreme conditions to keep it from cracking or warping. Only select boards will make it through this harsh process.

Some signs are created from a high density, open celled urethane foam called HDU. HDU foam is extremely versatile, making it a good choice when creating signs with unique shapes. For projects that require a wooden-style texture, a simulated wood grain is added to create a realistic effect. Many finishes and textures can be produced using HDU foam.

Second Step: Masking the Blank Sign

A sandblasted sign has a dimensional effect that is made by blasting the blank sign while covering it with a rubber mask. The rubber mask is cut from a digital design and is placed on the sign prior to sandblasting. The areas of the sign that will be sandblasted are cut out of the mask. This mask raises the protective areas and gives the surface a dimensional appearance.

Third Step: The Sandblasting Process

Sandblasting is a form of art. Dry, cool air is assembled in a sand tank at an extremely high pressure. The sand and air mixture is then channeled through a nozzle, stripping at everything it meets. The rubber mask will protect the certain parts by blocking the blasting mixture, causing it to simply bounce off. However, the exposed areas are eroded away, creating beautiful patterns in the wood or foam surface. After the sandblasting is finished, the sign thoroughly cleaned out to get rid of any sand particles left. Next, it is prepared for the finishing and priming process.

Sandblasting can be very dangerous because the sand is thrown at extremely high pressure and can easily destroy human skin. While this process is in effect, individuals should be in another room protected either by steel or very thick glass. Once the process is over, the room will need some time to settle down before the air is safe enough to breath. Safety glasses should always be worn when working with sandblasting.

Fourth Step: Priming the Sign

Blasted signs are primed according to their theme and use. All signs have different finishing requirements unless they are being mass-produced. To ensure long-life, your sign should be treated with materials that will protect it from rain, sun, and dirt. Raw sand blasted signs are very rough and may require several coats of primer in order to get a proper seal. A simpler solution is to apply the priming layer using a pressurized sprayer, although this can be a messy and expensive method for only treating one or two signs.

Each primer layers should be applied in a very thin coat and then left to dry. Once the primer has dried, lightly sand down the surface and add another coats. Multiple coats help create a strong barrier of protection against weather elements. However, not all signs need to be primed. Some natural wood materials are rich and beautiful in detail and do not require a protective layer. Nevertheless, your sign should have a priming layer if it is outdoors.

Fifth Step: The Finishing Touch

A variety of stains and clear coats can be used to decorate the sign after it has been shaped. You should use good quality materials to ensure that the colors will remain for a long time. A properly treated and maintained sign can last for decades if it is kept in the right conditions.

Making Your Own Sand Blasted Sign

Sandblasting a sign yourself is a very difficult process, but not unheard of. The biggest obstacle is obtaining a sand compressor as it is very expensive to purchase or even rent. A safe environment and proper tools are also required to ensure the safety of the individual working on the project. Overall, trying to sandblast the sign yourself is complicated and dangerous without proper equipment and experience.

However, you can have your own custom sign sandblasted by contacting a company that specializes in unique signs. Many of them will allow you to create your own design and then submit it to the company so they can sandblast it for you. This method cost far more than making your own sign, but companies who want their logo on their sign will need to use this process in order to create a unique trademark.
