If You Are Looking For Durability, Consider Custom Metal Signs

Posted by on Tuesday, 21 September, 2010

When most businesses think of custom signs and banners for their trade show they tend to overlook the value that custom metal signs can add to their display. If you have a large display area and you regularly attend different trade shows or expos you may want to look into investing into purchasing some customized metal signs to use in addition to the regular banners or other signs you use.

Metal signs have one advantage over most other types of signs and banners; they are much more durable and permanent. The cost of investing in a metal sign will soon be offset by the simple fact that you will be able to use the sign many times over. Of course, before going ahead with a custom metal sign you will need to plan in advance what you will use the sign for and what you want printed on it. As far as their design goes, they are usually highly customizable. They can be made from many different types of metal, with many custom sign designers also able to cut the metal into different shapes. Following are some typical uses for custom made metal signs that are used for display purposes.

Information: If you regularly need to display information about a product, such as the material it is made from, size and pricing options, or even POP displays to hold items that you are advertising, you may find that a metal sign better suits your needs.

Logos: Many companies find it helpful to have their logo design placed on a metal sign. The sign will not deteriorate with use and age, and it can be used many times. Frequently these are displayed on a wooden or metal stand which can be moved to any location. They can be placed on the top of cabinets or on counters and desks.

Directional Signs: If you have a large booth or display you may also find it helpful to have signs that point to specific displays or items. Small metal signs, similar to placeholders can also be used to label different sections of a larger display. Some signs can be made with a magnetic backing so that they easily attach to metal display shelves. They can also be made to sit on small stands which can be moved around at will, allowing greater flexibility when it comes to setting up displays.

Aside from the benefit of their being long-lasting, there are other reasons to consider using them. Depending on how they are made and the material they are made from, custom signs on metal can be fairly lightweight. Also, they do not bend, crease or become damaged easily during transportation. These two factors make them ideal when you have to transport them long distances, or ship them on ahead. No special packaging is needed and you do not need to worry how they will look once they reach their destination.

Metal signs are also useful for other purposes. You will frequently see custom metal street signs used around town. Many businesses will print their company name on a metal plaque that is mounted outside of their premises, and metal signs are used internally to point the way to different department sections. Nicely mounted custom made metal signs can also be used as nameplates that sit on desks. They are used on doors and at reception desks, in hallways, lobbies and outdoor parking areas. Basically, wherever you need a sign that is going to last and that looks professional, metal should be your choice.

There are many different choices when it comes to designing these types of signs. Most custom metal signs are made from aluminum which is hard wearing and yet still very light and manageable. They are great in areas that get a lot of traffic or in areas that are exposed to the outside elements. Different thicknesses of aluminum can be chosen, depending on how sturdy you need the sign to be and where it will be placed. Copper, bronze, stainless steel and brushed steel are also often used.

Aside from signs made from solid metal, some use thin layers that are soldered together instead. These are usually cheaper than the solid metal signs and they are generally quite a bit lighter. Thus they are best used indoors or when firmly attached to a building or wall. You can also buy custom metal signs where a very thin sheet of metal is attached to an acrylic backing. Again, these signs are usually quite cheap and very lightweight.

Usually you will be asked to supply your own artwork and graphics, although many companies will also help to design the sign for you for a small fee. You can place graphics on the sign and choose which typeset or font face to use for the text on the sign.

If you want something that is durable and yet looks very professional, whether for a trade fair or for your own business premises custom metal signs may be just what you are looking for. They are relatively cheap and very durable; definitely a good investment for anyone wishing to have a more permanent sign made.

The How and Why of Custom Wood Signs

Posted by on Wednesday, 1 September, 2010

Custom wood signs come in a variety of shapes and sizes and serve many purposes; they are some of the most versatile signs in the industry. The necessary tools range from hand tools to fully customizable, computerized routers. Sizes can range from a small plaque to the size of a billboard. Wood also lends itself to a wide variety of options that can alter its appearance, such as textures, colors, dimensions and shapes.

Tools of the Trade

The tools required to make customized wood signs vary according to the type of sign being manufactured. Wood signs can range from a painted sheet of plywood to a three dimensional routered sign. Different types of signs require the use of different tools. Some signs may incorporate many different tools to achieve the desired appearance.

For painted signs, the required tools may be as simple as paints and brushes. Saws may be required to alter the size of the sign, and polyurethane or another weatherproofing agent may be needed if the sign is going to be displayed outdoors. Painted signs can be some of the simplest signs to create, if the sign does not require any texture or carving. Painted signs can also be some of the most intricate and detailed signs.

For textured or carved signs, tools that are more technical will be required. For small signs with little detail, hand tools or a small hand router would be appropriate. However, for larger signs or signs with more intricate detail, a computerized router may be the best choice.

Computerized routers come in a multitude of shapes and sizes. They also come up with different levels of programmability. The most basic computerized routers may only be able to produce simple lettering and basic shapes and details, while the top-of-the-line routers will be completely programmable to produce three-dimensional signage with a variety of fonts, textures and graphics. Top-of-the line routers will require specialized software to produce electronic files that will tell the router how to cut and route the sign.

A custom wood sign, fresh off the router will require sanding to smooth out any rough edges before the sign can be painted or stained. Once the sign has been sanded, it will be ready to be painted, stained or otherwise treated. Some treatments may require special tools like word burning tools or special chemicals.

Types of Custom Made Wood Signs

There are many types of custom-made wood signs. From architectural signs to simple painted signs, using wood as a substrate allows for more flexibility in signage that is not cost effective in other materials.

Architectural signs are three-dimensional carved pieces of wood. They can be anything from a 2-inch thick panel of wood with a carved face to massive custom wood signs, carved into custom shapes. They can be painted, veneered, stained or burned to create the desired appearance. Architectural signs are usually cut with large computerized routers.

Billboards are another type of wood sign. They are basically, thin sheets of wood with a sign applied to them or painted onto them. With today’s technology, wooden billboards are becoming outdated as electronic billboards take their place.

Plaques are custom carved wood signs that are usually carved by hand or by smaller routers. These are often sold as novelties such as yard signs or signs for a child’s forts. Many businesses will present employees with small plaques for receiving certain honors or upon retirement. Plaques may be as simple or elaborate as desired, and may be gold or silver-leafed for decoration.

Simple painted signs are usually a piece of wood that has been hand-painted or screen-printed. These signs are not three-dimensional and are usually limited in color and size. Four foot by eight foot is usually as large as they get.

Benefits of Wood Signs

Using wood as a substrate for signs has many benefits. Wood is a renewable resource, biodegradable and weatherproof. Wood is sturdy and durable. It is cost-effective without looking cheap, and is incredibly versatile. Wood can be used to meet the needs for almost any sign.

Wood is one hundred percent natural. More can be grown to replace wood that is used and, if left untreated will eventually disintegrate back into the Earth as soil. Wood can also be treated with various chemicals to acquire varying degrees of weatherproofing. Wood can stand up to almost anything Mother Nature can do. Not only can it stand up to weather, it can be attached to many different types of structures and, in some cases, can even be freestanding.

With the invention of routers and specialty paints and treatments, wood has become incredibly versatile. It can be carved into any shape, made any size, and treated to look like anything. Stained wood has can have a classic, old-world look or a rustic, outdoors look. Painted wood can look modern or antique. With the specialty paints and treatments, wood can even look like metal.

Because of its versatility and renew-ability, wood is cost-effective. While not necessarily inexpensive, wood is not overly expensive, and different types of wood have different costs. Pine and other soft woods are usually inexpensive, while oak, mahogany and cherry tend to be more expensive. Hard woods like oak also tend to have more durability.

Summary

Custom wood signs can be very lucrative. They are cost-effective, durable and versatile. Thanks to technology and nature, wood is an ideal substrate for any signage.

Information on A Personalized Wood Sign

Posted by on Monday, 19 July, 2010

Since the dawn of civilization, signs have served as the guides to our lives. Not only do they point clearly in one direction or the other, telling us how to get from point A to point B, but also they proclaim a thousand other messages necessary to the navigation of a modern life. “Slippery Floor,” “Wait Here,” and “Road Closed,” just to name a few, are the types of messages we need conveyed quickly, simply, and effectively, and ever since an arrow could be drawn in the dirt, signs have been getting the job done. Of course, the evolution of the style and make of the sign has been a long journey.

While many of today’s signs favor the plastic or metal of an industrial society, this was not always the case, and although these signs fulfill their purpose, they leave one thing lacking; the rich romanticism that signs have to offer. Long before the machine could cut a stop sign, messages had to be painstakingly hand carved onto a stone slab. The upside of stones, of course, was their incredible durability. The downside was the difficulty with which they were made, and the difficulty of moving them from place to place, if need be. Therefore, when the technology to use a newer and more easily crafted material became available, it caught on like wild fire: wood!

The wood sign has been the mode of choice for hundreds of years. Proclaiming everything from the bakery to the cemetery, wooden signage has been making declaration after declaration in the most fashionable of ways for a long, long time. Everyone can recall the adventurous image of a signpost, with a dozen different pointed arrows in a dozen different directions, each pointing to a different city—Naples, Roma, Bologna!—in an exotic country. What a dream, to travel the world with only wooden arrows to lead you along, and all the adventure to be had between the posts!

Naturally, the more readily available signs became, the easier it was for individuals to purchase them for private use. The wealthier and most privileged families in Britain, France, Germany, and the New World, all began to make wood house signs. These were signs whose sole purpose was to declare, loudly and proudly, who lived in the house behind them. They would often have the address of the home and, as the homes got bigger and the wealth amassed even further, the homes themselves began to have names! Carved wood would state that the house was not only, say, the “Draper Residence,” but also that it was known as “The Geranium Cottage.” The prestige of having a sign was clear to all; in a time when hand carved wood was anything but cheap, anything with a sign was important enough for the public to have to know about it. If a house was important enough, it had a sign.

Today, the implications of a house sign are rather different. No one suspects that the homeowner is making a statement about their relative wealth or importance; gone are the days when signs carried a badge of home owning prestige. Now, a house sign is a wonderful way to welcome guests, personalize your home further, or just pay homage to a long and living tradition. Moreover, nothing could be easier! Today, there are hundreds of craftsmen willing to make personalized wood signs. These custom wood signs can say virtually anything you want them to, from “(Insert Name) Residence” to “Welcome” to, even, the name of your house! Although these custom signs began to be popular in rural areas, the quickly spread to vacation homes, especially to houses on the water, and from there they moved easily into suburban life.

If you are interested in purchasing a custom wood sign, either for yourself or as a gift (think housewarming gift or a good friend), the easiest and quickest way is to grab a phonebook and see if there are any local carvers or woodworkers in your area. If it turns out there are not, just go online and search “personalized wood signs,” and hundreds of options will pop up for your choosing. Once you contact a woodworker, you will be asked a series of questions, such as what kind of wood you would like, what shape do you want the sign, would you like any designs on the face of the sign, what font should the words be in, and, of course, what you want the words to say! If you do not have any idea what your answers would be to these questions, do not worry; the person you are speaking to is a professional, and it is their job to help you make these choices! After you order, the work is over! Just sit back and wait for your sign to be delivered, and enjoy a well labeled home!

Make Your Own Wood Sign

Posted by on Sunday, 4 July, 2010

Wood signs can be used for all different kinds of purposes. It is the most popular type of homemade sign because wood is easy to obtain and shape. Although metal can last longer in outdoor conditions, it is much more expensive and difficult to shape without specialized tools. Making a wooden sign is simple and can be done with minimal tools and experience.

Choosing Wood for Your Sign

The type of wood you choose is one of the most important steps when building wood signs. Cheap woods will rot easily so they should be avoided completely. Ply board and other thin woods should also not be used because they will quickly disintegrate when exposed to harsh conditions. When making outdoor wood signs, the wood will need to be as sturdy and weatherproof as possible. Teak wood is a good choice because it is weather resistant and will last a long time even if it is exposed to bad weather. Although it may be more expensive, in the end it will be a much better investment.

The post can be made from either wood or metal. This wood should also be highly weather resistant and strong enough to support the sign. For large signs, use multiple posts to add increased support. Once you purchase strong wood, you should still add a weatherproof coating to insure that it is completely resistant to rain and snow. If there are termites in the area, be sure to regularly spray to protect your sign and the post.

If you are not sure what materials to use, then try walking around your neighborhood and find out what materials the wooden house signs nearby are made from. Wood stores can also provide helpful recommendations on what materials to use for your sign.

Cutting and Shaping your Wood Sign

Strong woods are usually quite thick so they can be difficult to cut into complex shapes. The most common shapes for wooden signs are square, but they can also be circles, diamond, or any other shape you choose. Some people prefer to not shape the wood to give the sign a rustic appearance.

When buying wood for your sign you should make sure that is wider and longer than the required shape to provide room for cutting and sanding. If you want to shape the wood, you should have a sharp saw on hand for cutting. After the sign has been cut you will need to sand the both the sides and the surface to get rid of any loose chips and splinters.

Sign Creation and Design

Before putting your design on the wood, you should first draw it out on a sheet of paper to give an idea of what it will look like. Although a custom wood sign can be painted any color, many people prefer to leave them unpainted to display the wooden texture. After you are sure about your design, you can transfer it to the wood itself.

Carved wood signs are very popular, but they require expertise in woodcarving in order for them to come out properly. If you have done woodcarving before, you can carve your sign using a basic set of caving tools. However, carving is not convenient for large signs unless you want to work on the project all day.

When painting wood surfaces, make sure the wood is in a horizontal position. Never paint your custom wood sign once it is on its post or the paint may drip down leaving marks. Some woods tend to soak in paint so they may need multiple coats.

Building a Post

The post is an important part of building a sign because it will be holding it up all the time. A post should be planted deep inside the ground to ensure that it will not tip over in heavy winds. The ground should also not be muddy or it may fall out of its foundation. One tip is to create an additional foundation using cement or gravel to provide extra support. Once the cement has hardened, the pole will be unmovable so make sure it is at a straight angle.

Add a Protective Coating

Even if your wood is resistant to water, you should still add a protective layer to help it last longer. Varnish is often used to coat wood and can be purchased at most hardware stores. To add varnish, sand down the entire sheet of wood first and wipe of any sawdust and dirt. Usually the varnish container will have a list of instructions you can follow while applying it. Using a paintbrush, lightly brush the wood with the varnish until the entire area is coated. Leave for about 6 hours to dry, then lightly sand it again and apply another coat. Repeat this process a few more times as specified by the manufacturer.

A Brief History Of Neon Light Signs

Posted by on Saturday, 3 July, 2010

Neon light signs have been an iconic fixture of American culture since the invention of the modern day neon light at the turn of the 20th century. Today neon lights come in a variety of designs, shapes, styles and colors. The applications for such lights are also as vast and varied as their manufacture. Businesses such as bars, restaurants, gas stations and pretty much any organization that wants to draw some attention with a unique sign utilizes these devices. Some are as large as cars and even bigger as evidenced by the virtual neon city in downtown Las Vegas and some are made very small for storefront windows.

Lighted neon signs are a unique spectacle with and equally unusual development over time. Their invention was not a precise moment in time but a string of developments that span over 200 years. Basically, a neon sign is a compilation of glass tubes filled with the element neon in its gas form among other inert gases at a relatively low pressure inside the tube. When an electrical charge is applied inside the tube, the gases begin to glow.

In the middle of the 19th century or somewhere around 1855 to 1860, the Geissler tube was developed by a German glass blower of the same name. Geissler was also a physicist and designed the tube for testing electrical discharge. It was not until several decades later in the early 1900’s after many experiments had been performed using electric discharge lamps that neon lights in their pre-modern form were brought to the United States.

Although there are conflicting accounts, the invention of the first neon lamp as we know it today is credited to Georges Claude, a French chemist who was the first to apply an electrical charge to a pressurized tube filled with neon gas to create faint light. This development was displayed to the French public in December of 1910. Five years later, Mr. Claude would patent his invention going down in the history books as the man who invented the modern day neon light. He eventually took his research and invention further by creating a company known as Claude Neon and opening American eyes to the wonder and special that was a neon light. It is said the first neon lights sold in the U.S. where to a car dealership that paid over 1,000 dollars apiece for 2 signs in 1923.

Making neon signs today is both an art and a science. Neon tubes are made of glass and as such, must be heated to be bent and manipulated into the unique signs we see every day. The craftsman that does this work is similar to a glass blower however, in the industry they are commonly referred to as a glass bender. It takes years of training and experience to be able to successfully and artfully bend glass to make interesting and special glass designs for use in a neon light sign.

The whole process of making signs neon lights starts with varying lengths of hollow glass tubes purchased by a neon shop from a sign or glass supplier. Different compositions of glass can be used although most any will be suitable for use in a sign. Varying consistencies of glass include hard glass, soft glass, lead glass, soda/lime glass or barium glass. Temperatures to heat glass to its melting point can vary based on these compositions from sixteen hundred degrees F to over two thousand degrees. Color of the end product lamp is determined both by the type of tubing used as well as the gases that fill the tube through which an electrical charge will eventually run.

Several types of flames are used to heat the glass tube in sections depending on the type of bend the craftsman is trying to achieve. For example, a ribbon flame is used to make a gradual bend in the tube as opposed to a crossfire flame that is used to make a sharp turn bend in the tube. Many different flames can be used throughout the production cycle of a neon sign based on what it is to look like.

After bending, the tubes are sometimes coated with a phosphorescent powder that is laid on the interior wall of the tube. The tube is then filled with a gas mixture such as neon and other inert gases. Although neon has become the most well known gas used in this manufacturing procedure, many other gases for example argon or mercury in gas form are used to obtain different colors. The gas in the tubes is then ionized by high voltage and the tubes sealed. Electrode ends are placed at the ends of the tubes where colors will be the same so that they can be plugged into the power adapter mounted on the sign.

Many different styles of lighted neon signs are made today- Everything from animals and pictures of people to a Coors light neon signs. Nothing is impossible for glass benders to recreate. They also come in many different colors and sizes with some being as large as a car and others big enough to fit in your window at home.

Making a neon sign light is not a mass production operation. Many neon shops are smaller family owned businesses with highly skilled craftsman that spend hours manipulating glass to build unique individual signs. Many of the tools used in such shops and businesses are not commercially purchased but hand made by neon workers themselves based on the types of signs they make and their own person preferences. The next time you walk by a gas station or a grocery store and see a neon sign, think of the blood, sweat and tears that probably went into making it.

All About the Neon Light Sign

Posted by on Friday, 2 July, 2010

For over a century, the neon light sign has played an important part in advertising and pop culture, especially in the United States. These glowing pieces of art attract people to become patrons of all different kinds of businesses. They also inspire others to develop collections of these signs. Whatever their use, the neon sign continues to find wide use for many different applications even in today’s digital world.

Neon light signs are made from tubes of glass that are shaped into almost any possible configuration that can be imagined. They can form letters or simple designs such as circles and squares. Some of these advertising pieces have appeared in more complex designs. For example, neon signs made to look like boots or a cowboy hat often adorn country-western bars and grills. Once formed into the desired shape, the tubes are filled with an inert gas and then electrified to form glowing colors.

Even though these pieces are commonly referred to as neon signs, there are actually several different gases that are used in their construction. Advertisers and artists discovered long ago that the only way to get a variety of colors for their signage would be to employ a variety of elemental gases. The elemental gases that are used for these signs are known as the noble gases — helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon. Because these gases do not react with other elements very easily, they can be safely charged with electricity without causing a fire, explosion, or other problems. This low chemical reactivity also leads scientists to classify these gases as inert gases.

Lighted neon signs may include other gases, but they are typically called neon signs because neon was the very first gas used in their construction. The early history of these advertising pieces is a bit murky. Some would date them all the way back to 1883 and the Chicago World’s Fair, but others would place their origin in the early part of the twentieth century. Whatever the case may be, the production of these pieces was a specialized craft from the very beginning. Trained artisans produce neon signs by hand, and these individuals often construct their own equipment to aid them in the construction of a sign and the sign light. Neon and other gases are also inserted into the tubes of the sign by the crafter after they have been bent into the appropriate shape.

High voltage electrical wires that ionize the gas and make the tubes glow provide the actual neon sign light. Sometimes the colors result merely from the choice of gas itself. On other occasions, the glass tubes in the sign itself are coated with some kind of phosphor. The light produced when electricity is applied to the gas inside of the tube makes the phosphor molecules active, generating a specific color depending on the material that is used. Everything from the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow to deeper shades of purple, green, and more can be created. This is especially helpful for advertisers who know the power of color and light to attract potential customers to their stores. Artists also appreciate the color versatility as it allows them to create beautiful sculptures of almost anything in nearly any shape that they desire.

As noted, these signs continue to appear in businesses all around the country today. They may sit in the windows of storefronts or restaurants. Large billboards on top of grand casinos may feature these signs. Neon lights adorn the buildings in the most famous cities in the world and the most obscure towns that are hardly large enough to merit a place on any map. In every case, however, they have proven to be successful in meeting a specific advertising need.

Because neon signs are usually handmade, they often require a larger upfront investment than other options. However, business owners should be aware that these displays also last longer than many other advertising possibilities, meaning that they can actually cost less over time than the alternatives. A bar and grill that puts up a Coors Light neon sign, for example, may get ten or more years of use out of it before having to do any kind of special maintenance work on the piece.

Thus, it is clear that putting up a neon light sign might be the very best option business owners have when in the market for a product to advertise their company. If owners take the time to explore the many neon sign options and then work with the manufacturer to design the best-looking piece, then they will end up with a display that is fun to look at and that attracts many customers. Those who order a neon sign today are not going to be disappointed with the results of their purchase.

Sign Sand Blasting Process

Posted by on Thursday, 1 July, 2010

Sandblasted signs contain flexible and thick masking materials that adhere to the wood, protecting it from erosion throughout the sandblasting process. There are many different steps involved in creating sandblasting sands. Once the layout and design process have been completed, the fabrication begins.

First Step: Constructing the Blank Sign

The basic shape of the sign before the sandblasting process is known as a “Sign Blank”. Sandblasted wood signs are usually made from clear grade lumber, which is fairly thick and easy to work with. The lumber is treated under extreme conditions to keep it from cracking or warping. Only select boards will make it through this harsh process.

Some signs are created from a high density, open celled urethane foam called HDU. HDU foam is extremely versatile, making it a good choice when creating signs with unique shapes. For projects that require a wooden-style texture, a simulated wood grain is added to create a realistic effect. Many finishes and textures can be produced using HDU foam.

Second Step: Masking the Blank Sign

A sandblasted sign has a dimensional effect that is made by blasting the blank sign while covering it with a rubber mask. The rubber mask is cut from a digital design and is placed on the sign prior to sandblasting. The areas of the sign that will be sandblasted are cut out of the mask. This mask raises the protective areas and gives the surface a dimensional appearance.

Third Step: The Sandblasting Process

Sandblasting is a form of art. Dry, cool air is assembled in a sand tank at an extremely high pressure. The sand and air mixture is then channeled through a nozzle, stripping at everything it meets. The rubber mask will protect the certain parts by blocking the blasting mixture, causing it to simply bounce off. However, the exposed areas are eroded away, creating beautiful patterns in the wood or foam surface. After the sandblasting is finished, the sign thoroughly cleaned out to get rid of any sand particles left. Next, it is prepared for the finishing and priming process.

Sandblasting can be very dangerous because the sand is thrown at extremely high pressure and can easily destroy human skin. While this process is in effect, individuals should be in another room protected either by steel or very thick glass. Once the process is over, the room will need some time to settle down before the air is safe enough to breath. Safety glasses should always be worn when working with sandblasting.

Fourth Step: Priming the Sign

Blasted signs are primed according to their theme and use. All signs have different finishing requirements unless they are being mass-produced. To ensure long-life, your sign should be treated with materials that will protect it from rain, sun, and dirt. Raw sand blasted signs are very rough and may require several coats of primer in order to get a proper seal. A simpler solution is to apply the priming layer using a pressurized sprayer, although this can be a messy and expensive method for only treating one or two signs.

Each primer layers should be applied in a very thin coat and then left to dry. Once the primer has dried, lightly sand down the surface and add another coats. Multiple coats help create a strong barrier of protection against weather elements. However, not all signs need to be primed. Some natural wood materials are rich and beautiful in detail and do not require a protective layer. Nevertheless, your sign should have a priming layer if it is outdoors.

Fifth Step: The Finishing Touch

A variety of stains and clear coats can be used to decorate the sign after it has been shaped. You should use good quality materials to ensure that the colors will remain for a long time. A properly treated and maintained sign can last for decades if it is kept in the right conditions.

Making Your Own Sand Blasted Sign

Sandblasting a sign yourself is a very difficult process, but not unheard of. The biggest obstacle is obtaining a sand compressor as it is very expensive to purchase or even rent. A safe environment and proper tools are also required to ensure the safety of the individual working on the project. Overall, trying to sandblast the sign yourself is complicated and dangerous without proper equipment and experience.

However, you can have your own custom sign sandblasted by contacting a company that specializes in unique signs. Many of them will allow you to create your own design and then submit it to the company so they can sandblast it for you. This method cost far more than making your own sign, but companies who want their logo on their sign will need to use this process in order to create a unique trademark.

Making Your Home Beautiful – Wooden Signs Add Curb Appeal

Posted by on Tuesday, 29 June, 2010

First impressions are important and the outside of your home reflects your personality whether you want it to or not. If you have been neglecting the exterior of your house in favor of interior home improvements you might want to consider putting just as much effort and planning into the area of the home that everyone sees. Giving the exterior of your home a makeover will not only impress your neighbors but it may also increase the value of your home. Some homeowners avoid working on the exterior of their homes because they simply do not know where to begin when it comes to curb appeal. Creating an appealing yard can be quite a daunting task but with a bit of effort, you can completely transform the outside of your house in a reasonable time period. Although a larger home improvement budget creates additional design options, you can successfully upgrade your house on a smaller budget as well.

Start With Simple Ideas

Even the simplest of additions can add curb appeal. Pretty flower boxes, a uniquely designed mailbox or a beautiful wooden sign displayed in the entranceway can make a home more appealing. One budget friendly way of creating a welcoming effect for houseguests is to add wooden signs throughout your flower garden or to display a customized wooden address plaque outside of your house. Repaint the front door or even the entire house for a quick and effective makeover. It will make a huge difference, especially if your house currently features an out-dated color scheme. If you find it difficult to decide what colors are suitable for the outside of your house or what landscaping design would look the best, there are several software programs available which are designed to show home-owners what both the interior and exterior of their home will look like after landscaping, décor or remodeling changes have been made. These virtual photo programs offer the chance to play around with color options and different landscape designs before you decide which changes should be made to your property.

Making Necessary Repairs and Getting Organized

Take a walk around your property, making a list of any repairs that need to be made. A worn-out wooden front porch or paint chipped cement stairway can make your home look neglected and out-of-date. Applying a fresh coat of paint to your front steps will make an instant improvement and keeping your wooden porch sanded and stained will not only make it look great it will also help it to last much longer. Get rid of any junk that is being stored outside and use your garage, outdoor storage containers or garden shed to keep all of your outdoor items neat and organized.

Choosing a Theme for Your Home

People spend a great amount of time designing the inside of their homes but many do not bother to put in the same amount of effort when if comes to their outdoor space. Before you begin any outdoor improvements, choose a specific theme. Use your outdoor space to convey your personality. Whether you are chic and modern or old fashioned and friendly, the exterior of your home can reflect your unique style. Create a color scheme based on your theme and incorporate the colors throughout your exterior home décor. For example, if you have chosen a sunny country theme featuring a yellow and beige color scheme you could paint your front door beige, plant sunny yellow flowers in your garden and display beige and yellow painted wooden signs.

Outdoor Décor

Outdoor decorations add character to any home and do not have to cost a lot of money. Adding wooden house signs in the right areas will bring a sense of warmth and love to your house and make guests feel at home even before they step inside the front door. Choosing personalized wooden signs, which include your family name or a special saying, will make your home more memorable. If you cannot find anyone who offers custom wooden signs in your area you can find wooden signs made to order online.

Landscaping and Lighting

A beautifully landscaped yard will certainly spruce up your house. Create a budget friendly landscape design based on your theme or hire a professional landscaper to create a design for you. If your yard is too bare then add trees, bushes and flowerbeds to bring it to life. If you do not have a green thumb, you could add a lovely fountain or backyard pond surrounded by a stone pathway. Decorative fences are another simple way to liven up a dull outdoor area. If you are dealing with a small outdoor space or you are on a very tight budget then plant a small flower garden that includes old-fashioned carved wooden signs bordered with colored stones or cedar chips to bring personality to your yard. Enhance your landscape with outdoor lighting by using a variety of different lights to highlight the best features of your home. Lighting up your walkway, trees or fountain will create a dramatic effect, quickly boosting your home’s curb appeal.

New Office Signs Can Mean New Business

Interior office signage can create a subtle ambiance within the work area for office personal and visitors alike. Indeed, while the motif of the right office signage may not necessarily be responsible for the “first impression” that a visitor receives, it can certainly enhance or detract from the “second impression” the visitor soon gets once inside the office.

Why go to the expense of producing a catchy, artistic state of the art office sign outside when the office signs inside the building tell another, less desirable story?

Just like worn-out shoes on a sales person, if the signs on the doors of the various offices are “dated” in their appearance – or even in need of repair –a visitor will instantly feel that this is not the company with which he or she wants to do business. A visitor will get the impression that the company is either too revenue poor to replace or maintain the simple signs on the door, or that the people in the company just do not care. That is why signage for the office is so important to the image of a company – it affects what the potential clients that visit an office think of a company as well as how the employees in the work place feel about whom they work for. Moreover, that “feeling” in the workplace is just as important because it is money.

Most people do not like living in a house that is in need of repair, i.e.; the leaking faucet in the bathroom, the doorbell that only works half of the time and sounds like a dying animal when it actual does work, the “sticking” door in the hall closet. Most people like to live in a house where these little things are repaired and maintained. It is a matter of pride – self-respect.

The same is true in the work environment. Employees want to feel the pride of working in an office run by a company that cares enough to provide a professional, comfortable work environment. Walking past the main conference room office door sign that is cracked or has a couple of letters missing in “Conference Room” does not instill a sense of pride, especially when the discussion inside the conference room is centered around how to best go after that multi-million dollar account that the competition currently holds – the competition that has those nice, new, tastefully appointed offices across town; the competition that has been sniffing around the office trying to lure employees away.

The fact is it does not take much to update, repair, or replace office door signs. Take the conference room as an example; a basic door or wall sign that says “Conference Room” in a brushed metallic face that is framed in a black architectural metal trim could be purchased for as little as $30. Choose the same basic style in a “sliding” design that can indicate either “Available” or “In Session” with its sliding feature and the price is only about $45 – or perhaps $55 or $60 if choosing a more customized design that might include the company logo.

Surprisingly, full color office names plates and office signs are not much more expensive to purchase than single color nameplates and office signs. Yet, the full color signs, usually incorporating the logo of the company near the employee name or office designation, do provide a much richer look to the office – a feeling of permanence and that of an established entity. At the same time, a directory containing up to six listings beneath as custom color print of the company logo on a brushed metallic face is less that $190 and can give a quick layout to the visitor of the medium size office they have just entered.

Another consideration within the office place is the use of ADA Braille signs. Under the law, permanent architectural structures are required to have ADA approved signage placed in the building at stairways, at and inside elevators, next to restrooms and near smoking areas. Most offices within a building get around the requirement of placing ADA signage because the offices are considered not to be part of the permanent architecture of the building. They are often “build outs” that the owner of the building has done for the tenants of the building and, therefore, can be changed whenever the lease is up or the tenant’s needs change.

However, some companies, sensitive to their employees with disabilities will have ADA Braille signs placed within their office space – even if they are not required to do so.

Replacing the entire office interior with the uniformed look of customized office signage that incorporates the company logo will not only tie the overall effect to the “first impression” – that outdoor company sign that greets everyone as they approach the office – it will also increase employee morale and pride.
