Getting Organized With Your Own Cork Board Wall Covering

Posted by on Saturday, 19 June, 2010

In this article I am going to share with you one of the biggest lifesavers ever when it comes to getting organized. If you have a home office, you are going to do two things after reading this article. The first thing is you are going to attempt to kick yourself. Once you are wore out from doing that you are going to take the advice that I am about to share with you and organize your office today.

My home office use to look like a hurricane ran through it then came back for seconds. That is until I stumbled upon a wall cork board on my way in the grocery store. I have been in and out of this store hundreds of times, and for some reason this day I noticed all the little ads hanging up on this cork board on my way in. I definitely needed one of those for the home office. At the time, I had sticky notes all over the place, the walls, the filing cabinet, even the desk lamp.

I went to my local office supply store and I received nothing but disappointment. The only type of boards that they had been small ones, I could easily fill that one with the notes that were stuck to my filing cabinet. I turned to the Internet and struck gold; I had found cork sheets in every size imaginable. I could even cork board the side of my house if I wanted to, although it would not be cost effective – but I think you get the point.

As I began to do my research, I realized that cork boards for walls were growing in popularity. Even better yet they were environmentally friendly, which really struck a cord with me since I have been trying to go green. I dug even deeper and discovered that corkboards came from the bark of cork trees from Portugal and nearby countries. At first glance, that sounded like a negative thing until I read further and discovered that no trees were destroyed during the process.

When trying to install the cork on the wall, most people will attempt to glue the board directly to the wall; this is a huge mistake. Eventually you will want to remove the cork sheets, because either you want to move and take it with you or maybe you decide to redecorate. Whatever the reason the day may come and if it does, and you have glued the board on wall it is virtually impossible to remove it without destroying your wall.

The company that I purchased the cork from recommended that I use pins or thumbtacks. This would make holes in the wall, which would also defeat the goal of not destroying your wall. The best option that I have found thus far is to use a fiberboard backing board for the wall corkboards. In an effort of keeping it all green, this was the best solution. This method also had other advantages such as it would aid with noise protection as well as heat insulation, which is a win-win all the way around.

Either I have experimented with different methods and most caused the cork sheets to destroy the wall or the cork would fall off the wall after a while. After a little trial and error, I have found that contact cement works fine and you can glue it directly to the fiberboard. It is recommended that you coat the back of your board as well as the fiberboard. By doing so you will ensure that, your board is firm and secure. Since the cork sheets are so porous it is recommended that you give is a second coating just to be safe.

When installing the board you should use a roller to firmly press the board to the fiberboard. For best results, you will want to roll from the center outward to the edges to avoid bubbles. You will want to place the fiberboard on the wall in sections. It is challenging to get the correct fit if you attempt to attach the fiberboard to the original wall, and then attempt to place the cork board covering on top. Things will go a lot smoother if you use an electronic stud finder to locate the wall studs. Attach the covering to the studs to minimize the damage to the original wall.

My office is looking a lot better now days, and it is all thanks to the corkboard wall covering. There is however a downside to having the board in my office. The kids often come in and hang everything imaginable on my wall, drawings, I love you daddy, and you name it. My wife has even claimed a section for her honey-do-list. I guess that is not a downside at all.

You are going to be amazed at how fast and easy it is to install your very own cork board wall covering. It is extremely cost effective, and you are doing your part to save the environment. What more can you ask for?

Cork boards are a great way to introduce more organization into your home or office space. Refrigerators or office walls cluttered with reminders, save the date cards and phone numbers are a common sight, but they are often ineffectual in presenting information in an easy to see way. Many organization experts are recommending that people forgo this disorganized approach in favor of a cork bulletin board, which gives users ample room to prominently display anything they need without fear of losing it. If you are one of the many who would like to become more organized, consider adding a cork notice board to your office or home.

A cork board can be purchased in almost any shape or size imaginable. Before you set out to find the perfect cork board for your needs, consider its ideal function. If you are looking for a place at home to keep running grocery lists or important phone numbers, consider investing in one of the smaller cork boards that are on the market. This way, it can be hung unobtrusively in the kitchen, ensuring that it will be seen but will not detract from your decor. Those with more extensive display needs can opt for one of the larger models available. Many home offices are helped immensely by the addition of a full cork board wall, which allows anyone to keep any deadlines or upcoming events in mind. Whether your needs are at one extreme or the other, or if they fall somewhere in between, there is no doubt a cork board option that will perfectly suit you.

Once you have considered what will be displayed on your new cork board, it is time to think about the aesthetics. Decorative cork boards are becoming more and more popular among all types of customers. These boards are often colored or printed with designs that reflect the decor of a room or the interests of the user. They represent a pretty departure from the standard beige board and will add a note of whimsy to any room. When adding a cork board to a child’s room, consider choosing one that is printed with a floral pattern. Your child will love using it, making them more likely to start an organization plan and stick with it. Cork boards are also available in more grown up designs. Popular options include modern, monochrome looks that will blend with any color scheme.

For a more individualized look, cork board sheets can also be customized at home. One need not be a seasoned crafter to create a personalized cork board that will blend with and enhance the decor. With nothing more than a small piece of fabric and some push pins or staples, one can cover the surface of their cork board with fabric of any color or pattern. This covering will in no way inhibit the functioning of the board, and can be changed without purchasing a new one. When covered, boards may be added to foyers or doorways without detracting from the look of the room, even when they are empty. This is a great way to ensure that you are prepared each time you leave the house and will cut down on the need to make multiple trips when an item is forgotten.

Office settings typically require a larger cork board than those needed at home. Framed cork boards or cork bulletin boards are a must in employee common areas. They are the perfect way to share interoffice memos and general company announcements. In break rooms, consider adding cork boards that display sales goals or promote good work. It is a low cost way to ensure that employees remain focused and feel appreciated. In shared media rooms or near printers, cork boards are a great way to provide reminders of large deadlines, meeting room schedules or changes in company policy. This is a great alternative to the never-ending stream of informational emails that can be lost or overlooked.

If you are designing a new office, consider opting for cork board tiles instead of the framed board option. These tiles make it simple to customize a cork board for your needs and the available space. They are generally far less expensive than other options, and can easily be cut into any shape you need. The lightweight of the tiles makes them incredibly easy to hang, and also makes it possible to add them to even temporary walls. These tiles are sold in almost every office supply store, both locally and online.

Cork boards are a versatile way to increase the level of organization anywhere. They are a low cost system that is highly customizable, easy to install, and will quickly result in a less cluttered, more beautiful home or office. If you have been trying to find a way to simplify your life, consider installing some cork boards today.
