Using Vintage Metal Signs at Your Trade Show Booth

Posted by on Saturday, 29 May, 2010

There are so many different kinds of signs that it can be hard to know which one or ones to pick for your trade show booth. There are modern style pop up banners in all shapes and sizes that will compliment any booth quite nicely. There are banners and banner displays that are sleek and stylish and many booths opt to use them to attract customers. However, it is precisely because pop up stands and banner displays are so popular that a vintage metal sign will stand out tremendously and catch people’s attention. Vintage metal signs used to be a lot more common a long time ago but now they are rare and not so often seen. Having one of these set up for your booth will be eye catching and may even attract more people to your booth than a more modern, cutting edge style sign.

Of course, you will have to make sure that the style of vintage metal sign that you are considering will go well with what you have to offer. Keep in mind that if you are offering computer based products or services that having a metal sign will almost invariably clash with your product. It also depends on what you want the overall design and style of the booth to look like. If you set up an older fashioned style of sign then your booth overall should have the same style of design to it or else it will look tacky and mismatched, repelling potential customers.

Planning the look and style of your booth is very important and needs to be given proper time and attention. Start on it as early as possible and do not leave anything to chance, or to the last minute. Decide on what will go where; see how large the booth is so that you know how large or small a sign to have. Also, you can often have more than one sign if the booth is medium sized or larger sized; plan out where to put the signs so that they catch people’s attention but do not block any products you are offering, or get in people’s way.

It is particularly important to plan ahead if your booth is to have a more ‘antique’ look to it. Often the items you need to give it the right look are either hard to find if you want them cheap, or very expensive to buy at an antique shop. Planning early gives you the time to do a bit of shopping around, either on the Internet or by looking at different shops. One good idea is to keep an eye out for older style shops or restaurants that are remodeling or closing down. These places may have just what you need and be willing to sell it to your cheaply or even give it to you to get it off their hands.

You can find vintage metal signs and other items you need at garage sales or flea markets or one Internet sites such as Craigslist and eBay. Often these signs have been sitting in someone’s storage for a long amount of time by the time they are sold and the person selling them does not value them all that much, so you can get them for quite a bargain. If you do not have the time to go shopping around for a metal sign then there are antique shops that sell them and it is a lot simpler to just walk into one, find what you are looking for, pay and walk out, but be aware that it is also a lot more expensive. Interestingly enough, antique shop owners often get the metal signs that they are selling from garage sales and flea markets so it is not like you will get a better quality sign by buying it at the antique shop as opposed to buying it at a cheaper location.

If you are selling something that is particular to another country, such as Thai, Indian, or Chinese merchandise, you may want to consider getting a metal sign from that country and using it to highlight your product. This is particularly eye catching and people will not soon forget your booth even if they do not purchase anything from you right then. It is possible, via the Internet, to buy such items from other countries. You will have to pay for the postage but it is well worth it if you want your booth to truly stand out as unique.

Once you buy a good metal sign, hold on to it even if you only plan to use it for one trade show and not future ones. You never know when these items can come in handy and be just what you need for a booth or exhibition in the future.

The Metal Sign – A Sturdy Alternative

Metal is one of the sturdiest materials that you can use to make a sign. Wood signs often require repainting every few years to maintain a good appearance but the paint on metal signs are known to last for much longer. Most road signs are constructed out of metal and if properly made can last well over 10 to 15 years.

Metal signs have hundreds of uses and they can be placed on roads, schools, in front of companies, trains stations, advertisements, and many more. There are hundreds of different shapes and sizes of signs square, rectangle, and circles are the most used shapes. Some signs may only be one foot wide while others are large enough to overshadow a highway.

The most popular signs made of metal are found a sheet of metal that is then painted over with whatever the sign needs to say. The sign is then attached to either one or multiple posts and driven into the ground. Metal street signs and property signs are generally made like this.

Custom metal signs are usually blanks signs that allow the individual to add whatever text they want on it. These types of signs are great for a school or private property as they enable you to put your own personalized text on the sign. Some customizable signs may already have some text on it but with a space to put your text. For example, a sign may have ‘STOP’ on it, but there underneath there is a blank spot where you could put your personal text. Other signs may contain someone’s personal name or address, or the address of a company. The simplest type of customizable sign allows the individual to just paint their text on the sign. These sigs come in a large variety of durable metals such as aluminum and steel, as iron.

Engraved signs are much more difficult to create than normal metal signs. This usually requires the sign to be under an intense amount of heat so the metal is flexible. The outputting text can then be engraved into the metal. Some signs are run through metal stamps, which will cut letters of the alphabet through the metal forming the sentence.

Vintage metal signs can also be found at a variety of places, many of these depict scenes during the 19th and early 20th century. Some restaurants and stores still use these vintage style signs to add a unique and nostalgic touch. Some vintage signs are truly ‘vintage’ and have lasted all the way from the early 20th century. An old metal sign may be found in areas that have preserved structures from the past.

A sign can help to draw in customers or make announcements to people passing by. Making a sign of metal is actual quite simple, all the material you need is found in most hardware stores. Metal sheets can be found in a number of places and metal sign holders can be bought easily as well.

The first thing you’ll need to do is draw the shape and size of the sign you’re going to be building, you should first use a piece of cardboard to draw on so you don’t ruin the metal sheet. Cut the cardboard shape out and trace the shape onto the metal sheet with a marker. Next, you will need a pair of tin snips to cut out the shape from the metal sheet. Be sure to wear gloves when doing this as you could easily cut yourself on the sharp metal.

After you have the correct shape, sketch what you intend to draw on the metal sheet. If you are creating a pattern, first create the pattern on a cardboard sheet and then slice out patterns shapes to trace on the metal. To add text, draw the text on a cardboard sheet and then cut out the letter, now take the cardboard stencils and use them for lettering. It is important to make sure the letters are straight and evenly spaced between each other.

When painting the sign, cover the other areas with painter’s tape and focus on one specific area at a time. If you are using normal paint, make sure that you make quick, light strokes. The lighter the strokes are the better because hard strokes will leave stroke marks after the paint has dried. An easier way to paint the sign would be to spray paint it. Continue to paint each area until it has received the depth of color you want. Now let it dry.

After the paint has dried, peel the tape off another section of the sign and paint that section, you should continue this process until the entire sign has been painted. To mount the sign drill the sheet into a metal sign holder and drive it into the ground.
